Sickle cell patients celebrated "World Sickle Cell Day June 19th 2011"
on Saturday June 18th at Mulago Sickle Cell Clinic, Kampala, Uganda.

About 300 patients with sickle cell anemia and especially children were in attendance with their parents. The local musician and entertainer Eddie Kenzo "Stamina" entertained the people and refreshments were served. We are grateful to have Mrs. Damali Mukiibi of DFCU Bank on our team for her generosity with her friends who offered financial support and also donated the children's gifts to all the children in attendance. In addition a flat screen television was donated by well wishers of Ugandan-Americans community living in Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex Texas, USA under the leadership of UAA Greater DFW President Frank Sentamu. Patients with sickle cell come from all over parts of Uganda to seek for treatment in the only sickle cell clinic at Mulago referral hospital. The kids spend the entire day waiting to be seen by the doctors. While the children with for their doctor's appointment, they will be able to utilize the education materials via DVD including music and to help ease the pressure and stress of a ten to eleven hours wait for doctor's appointments. The TV was presented to Dr. Ndugwa, Professor and head of sickle cell clinic at Mulago hospital. It was presented by Mr. Chris Kato Muganga, President of the newly formed Uganda Sickle Cell Rescue in Uganda. We are thanks to USCR team members who worked hard to make this a joyful day for those affected by sickle cell anemia. Among other attendees were USCR team, Sister Namirembe Senior Principal staff of Nsambya Hospital, Hon. Balemeezi, Dr. Anyuu, Dr. Ndugwa, nurses, and doctors of the sickle cell clinic of Mulago Hospital.

BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT "GETS RID OF" SICKLE CELL ANEMIA

In a study of 10 adults with the blood disease, the procedure cures nine. More tests are needed, but the treatment could be used on other diseases as well.

Researchers have for the first time performed a successful bone marrow transplant to cure sickle cell disease in adults, a feat that could expand the procedure to more of the 70,000 Americans with the disease -- and possibly some other diseases as well.

About 200 children have been cured of sickle cell with transplants, but the procedure was considered too harsh for adults with severe sickle cell disease. Now a team from the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University is reporting today in the New England Journal of Medicine that it has developed a much-less-toxic transplant procedure and used it to cure nine of the first 10 patients studied.
