BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT NOW FULLY HEALED FROM SICKLE CELL ANEMIA!

Carol's Life before, during, & Post Bone Marrow and Cord blood transplant.

Carol Mulumba is a Bone Marrow Transplant recipient and a Sickle Cell Disease Survivor. She has taught us a lot about sickle cell, life, and the things we take for granted on a daily basis.

The story of Mariam Carol Mulumba is a story of human resilience which we are telling here in the hope that it inspires others. Many sickle cell children live in the torment of pain all their lives, with constant hospitalizations, undergoing needle sticks, and tones of medical procedures. They carry these to adulthood where little changes await.

Carol is featured in this educative video about survivors of Sickle Cell anemia. Produced by the National Marrow Donor Program.

Carol lived through the sickle cell nightmare for the first six years of her life; averaging 3 hospitalizations a month. Multiple transfusions, transcranial dopplers, chest x-rays, abdominal ultrasound, and a million needle sticks. We are glad to report that she is now a bubbling eight year old, free of sickle cell disease, thanks to bone marrow transplant. This page is dedicated to our daughter Carol with the goal of inspiring hope and comfort to sickle cell anemia children and the parents taking care of them the world over.

Carol would like to hear your experience with the sickle cell anemia disease or someone you know. Please write to her through our contact page so she can add your story to the website Testimonial page.

FIVE YEAR OLD BONE MARROW DONOR GIVES SISTER A NEW LEASE ON LIFE.

Mark Mulumba is the HERO.

Our son Mark Mulumba is our middle child. When our daughter Carol battled sickle cell disease, her hematologist and oncologist doctors told us that she will need a bone marrow transplant to save her life. At that time, Mark was 5 years old. Fortunately the bone marrow doctor found out that Mark's DNA/HLA typing matches that of Carol. Mark donated his bone marrow to our then 7 year old daughter Carol Mulumba. Mark underwent general anesthesia in order for the doctor to harvest bone marrow from his bilateral femur. On October 28th at 0900 am Carol received the GIFT OF LIFE from his brother Mark. On October 29th, Carol received Mark's cord blood that was saved at the time Mark was born "five years ago". This page is dedicated to our HERO son Mark and all other HEROES who have donated the gift of life to save some one's life.

PROPOSED SICKLE CELL CENTER IN UGANDA

ABOVE: A computer generated picture of the proposed Sickle Cell Center

Sickle Cell patients have only one clinic in Mulago where both pediatric and adult patients have to be seen. Given this state of affairs, it makes sense that the sickle cell community constructs a home or sickle cell day care center that could be a one-stop multi-faceted center. In addition to housing a clinic, the center will have a lab, training facilities, information center, and offices. It is going to be constructed on a piece of land which was donated to the sickle cell community by the Mulumba family.

The Proposed Center will have:
Three level building with about 54 rooms:-
*Sickle Cell Head Offices | Sickle Cell Daycare Center | Laboratory | Library
*Conference room | Guest Houses | Nursing Station | Doctor's room
*Visiting doctor or nurse's room | Medical & Nurse Students room | Record room
*Computer room | Day Care wards | Pharmacy room | Consultation room
*Counseling rooms

Please join us and help donate towards this noble cause!
